Advanced Choir
The Advanced Choir is a Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass (SATB) choir - participation is by invitation only. The choir is a widely-recognized and highly-regarded ensemble, having received numerous awards and trophies over the last two decades.
The Advanced Choir is directed by Mr. Theodore Thorpe III and is made up of approximately 50 dedicated students, from grades 9-12. Members of the choir rehearse diligently both in class, and after school - their motto is Work Ethic Over Talent. In addition to performing seasonal concerts and competing in music competitions, the Advanced Choir makes annual appearances at local venues to share their talent with the community.
In the three years following the COVID pandemic shut down, the Advanced Choir has participated in five competitions, winning first place trophies and earning ratings of Superior at each. They also won Outstanding Soloist and Overall Grand Champion awards at the 2023 and 2024 OrlandoFest music festivals in Orlando, FL The choir has also worked with a number of esteemed directors, including Dr. Jason Max Ferdinand from University of Maryland, and Dr. Jeffery Redding from University of Central Florida in an effort to "fine tune"their unified sound.
Music performed by the choir covers many styles and periods and ranges in difficulty from III-VI based on the VCDA rating system. Attendance at all concerts and special performances is required. Choir members are encouraged to audition for and participate in VMEA Honors Choir, District Chorus, and the All-Virginia Chorus.
The Alexandria City High School Advanced Choir gives talented, hard-working young adults a chance to form a tight-knit community and share their voices with the world.
